Naturopathic care for hair loss in Ontario
Dr. Victoria Posavad, ND
Dr. George Makrides, ND
Dr. Yehia Al-Hashmi, ND
A widening part, handfuls in the shower, a hairline that's moving, or hair that's simply thinner than it was. Hair loss is usually a symptom, not the problem. A regulated Naturopathic Doctor finds what's behind it, ferritin, thyroid, androgens or a shed after a hard stretch, and builds a care plan around your goals.
Not sure if naturopathic care is for you?
Direct billing with more than 30 insurers. Insurance-ready receipts for the rest.
First appointments within days. No referral, no waitlist, anywhere in Ontario.
The six things we hear the most.
These come from the hair questions in our quiz, in the order people pick them.
- 01My part is widening, or thinning at the crown
- 02Overall thinner, more scalp showing
- 03Handfuls in the shower or brush
- 04Breakage or baby hairs at the hairline
- 05Receding at the temples
- 06It started a few months after a baby, an illness, or a very stressful stretch
Often with company: heavy periods, feeling cold all the time, exhaustion, jawline breakouts, or restrictive eating and recent weight loss. Each points to a different cause. If two or three of these sound like you, talk it through with a Naturopathic Doctor on a free call.
of women have visible hair loss by age 40. Most are told it's genetic, or stress, before anyone checks ferritin, thyroid or androgens.
Source: American Academy of Dermatology.
Most people have already been told it's genetic, or stress.
Normal isn't the same as explained.
Biotin, a new shampoo, and a shrug. They don't tell you why it started. Shedding after a hard stretch, thinning at the crown and a receding hairline have different causes, and each responds to different work.
Five patterns we investigate
- 01Telogen effluvium: the shed that follows a baby, an illness, a crash diet or a hard year
- 02Ferritin, iron and B12, the most common findings behind diffuse shedding
- 03Thyroid, including antibodies
- 04Androgens: PMOS, perimenopause, and the pattern at the part and crown
- 05Scalp health, inflammation and the gut

An honest read.
A good fit if
- Your symptoms have gone on for months or years with no clear explanation
- You've been told it's genetic or stress, with no bloodwork to back it up
- You're looking for a science-based holistic approach to healthcare
- You live in Ontario and you're comfortable with video or phone appointments
Not sure? That's what the call is for.
Tell a Naturopathic Doctor what's going on and they'll tell you plainly whether this is the right next step. If it isn't, they'll say so. You've spent ten minutes, not $249.
The questions people search first.
Straight answers, in plain language.
Is my hair loss hormonal?
Often, but not always. Thinning at the part or crown points toward androgens, shedding in handfuls a few months after a baby, an illness or a hard stretch points toward a temporary shed, and hair loss with cold hands, fatigue or heavy periods points toward thyroid or iron. Testing sorts it out.
What ferritin level is needed for hair growth?
Ferritin can be inside the lab's normal range and still be too low for hair. Many clinicians aim for a ferritin comfortably above the low end of the range before expecting regrowth, and rebuilding it takes months. Your Naturopathic Doctor will tell you where you sit and what a realistic timeline looks like.
Will my hair grow back?
A shed from iron, thyroid, illness or a crash diet usually does once the driver is corrected, over six to twelve months. Pattern thinning driven by androgens can be slowed and partly improved, but honesty matters here: no one can promise regrowth, and we won't.
Does an oily scalp cause hair loss?
Not on its own, but it often travels with androgen-driven thinning and scalp inflammation. We wrote a fuller guide: is my hair falling out because my scalp is oily?
Do you see men for hair loss?
Yes. The workup is the same, and male pattern loss has a strong androgen component that a Naturopathic Doctor addresses alongside whatever your physician or dermatologist recommends.
How much does a naturopath cost in Ontario?
At Fitra Health the first call is free, the first 60-minute appointment is $249, and follow-ups are $99 for 30 minutes or $199 for 60. Lab work is passed through at cost. Most extended health plans cover naturopathic visits, and we bill more than 30 insurers directly.
Is naturopathic medicine covered by OHIP or insurance?
OHIP doesn't cover naturopathic visits. Most workplace and private extended health plans do, up to an annual maximum. We bill through TELUS eClaims where your insurer is on the network and issue an insurance-ready receipt where it isn't. Visits are HST-exempt and may qualify for the medical expense tax credit.
Do I need a referral?
No. You book directly. Bring any results you already have and your Naturopathic Doctor starts from there rather than repeating work.
This page is general education, not medical advice, and it is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. It does not create a practitioner-patient relationship. Nothing here is a promise of an outcome. Anything on this page that applies to you should be discussed with a Naturopathic Doctor or your physician, who can look at your history and your results.
Fitra Health connects Ontario residents with Naturopathic Doctors registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. Care is virtual and available across Ontario. Naturopathic Doctors are regulated health professionals; they do not replace your family doctor or emergency care.
