Is Your Hair Shedding or Breaking? How to Tell (and Why It Changes Everything)

Pick a hair off your pillow and look at the end of it. A pale bulb means it left the follicle. A blunt or frayed end means it snapped. Same pile in the drain, completely different problem.

There is a test you can run right now on a hair off your pillow, and it takes about two seconds.

Look at the ends. If the strand is full length and has a small pale bulb on one end, that hair left the follicle. That is shedding. If the piece is shorter than your hair and both ends look blunt or frayed, with no bulb, it snapped somewhere along its length. That is breakage.

In the drain they are indistinguishable. As problems they have almost nothing in common, and very little that helps one does anything at all for the other. Getting this wrong is why people spend a year on the wrong fix.

The two-second test

Broken hair looks like this:

  • Shorter than the rest of your hair
  • A blunt or frayed end, no bulb
  • Lots of uneven little pieces, often around the face or where you tie it
  • Worse in the specific places you apply heat or tension

Shed hair looks like this:

  • Full length, root to tip
  • Often a small pale bulb on one end
  • More of it in the shower, on the pillow, in the brush
  • Spread across your whole head rather than one area

One clarification worth making, because it causes real panic. That pale bulb is not a follicle you have torn out. It is the normal keratin root of a hair that had finished its growing phase and was ready to go. The follicle stays in your scalp. This club-shaped root is a recognised feature that dermatologists look for under a microscope when assessing shedding (Park et al., 2020, PubMed: 33911725). Note the word often, though. Not every shed hair shows a textbook bulb, so its absence on one strand does not rule shedding out.

Breakage: the damage is outside your body

Breakage is mechanical. The hair shaft is stressed until it snaps. That means the causes are things you are doing to your hair, and the fixes are things you stop doing.

Here is the part most content on this topic gets wrong, so it is worth being blunt about. A hair shaft is dead keratin. It has no blood supply and no cells. Once it is damaged, it cannot repair itself, and no product rebuilds it. Treatments that promise repair are coating the outside and temporarily smoothing the appearance.

So gentler handling does not heal the hair you already broke. What it does is stop new breakage, while healthy new growth slowly replaces the damaged lengths. That is a real improvement and you will usually see it. But it arrives over months rather than washes, and it often needs a trim to take off the worst ends. Anyone promising a turnaround in a few washes is selling you something.

What actually causes it

Ranked roughly by how confident we can be:

Tension is the best evidenced. Tight ties, slick buns and tight braids put steady mechanical stress on the shaft. The same habit carries a second, more serious risk, covered further down (Akingbola and Vyas, 2017, PubMed: 29035284).

Bleach and heat come next. Bleaching disrupts the protein bonds that give hair its strength, and high heat from straighteners and curling irons denatures keratin. This is well accepted in dermatology, though it rests more on the chemistry than on large trials.

Wet handling is real, but more specific than the usual advice suggests. Wet hair behaves differently rather than simply being weaker. Combing it wet produces fewer breaks at the ends, but more breaks along the middle of the shaft (Robbins and Kamath, 2007, PubMed: 17728947). The risk climbs sharply when hair is both wet and bleached. Ordinary gentle combing exerts very little force on a single hair. So the problem is not combing itself. It is force applied to hair that is already damaged (New et al., 2018, PubMed: 30076777).

Rough towels are plausible and completely unstudied. Friction is friction, and swapping a rough towel for a soft one costs nothing, but nobody has tested it. Treat it as sensible rather than proven.

What helps, weighted honestly

Looser styles. The strongest item on the list, and the only one with real evidence behind it. Less tension means less snapping and less risk of the longer-term problem described below.

Less heat, and air drying where you can. Logical and widely recommended. Not formally trialled, but the underlying chemistry is not controversial.

A wide tooth comb, used gently, especially on wet hair. Standard advice, plausible, not rigorously tested against a fine tooth comb.

A silk pillowcase. This one is the weakest of the four and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Lab measurements show silk has a lower friction coefficient against hair than cotton. Whether that translates into meaningfully less breakage on real heads over time has not been properly established, and the specific percentages that circulate online should be treated with suspicion. It is harmless and it might help a little. It is not where to start.

Shedding: the signal is internal

Shedding is a different category entirely. The follicle releases the hair early, usually because something in your physiology changed. Common drivers are low iron and ferritin, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal shifts, and a stretch of significant stress or illness.

The timeline nobody explains

This is the part that causes the most unnecessary distress, and it is worth understanding before you start blaming things.

Shedding does not begin when the trigger happens. There is generally a lag of about two to three months between the event and the point you notice hair in the drain. Postpartum shedding, one of the best studied versions of this, typically starts three to six months after delivery (Gizlenti and Ekmekci, 2014, PubMed: 23682615). So the stressful month, the illness, the crash diet or the change in medication you are looking for is usually not last week. It is the one before last.

Recovery runs on the same slow clock. Shedding tends to peak and then settle around the three month mark, which is where the common advice to give it three months comes from. But that is when the shedding calms, not when your hair looks like it used to. Getting density back generally takes somewhere in the range of nine to eighteen months, because hair grows roughly a centimetre a month and has to start from scratch.

Knowing this in advance matters. Most people abandon a plan that was working at the eight week mark, because eight weeks was never going to be enough time to see it.

When it is neither, and needs looking at

Most breakage is a handling problem and most shedding has a findable cause. A few patterns are neither, and these are the ones where getting assessed early genuinely changes the outcome.

The most important one connects directly to the tight styles above. Sustained pulling on the same part of the scalp can progress from breakage to traction alopecia, where the follicle itself is affected. Caught early it is reversible. Left running for long enough it becomes scarring, and scarred follicles do not grow hair again (Akingbola and Vyas, 2017, PubMed: 29035284). A hairline quietly receding exactly where you tie your hair is not a cosmetic issue to solve with a serum.

Get assessed rather than self-treating if you notice:

  • Thinning or a receding edge specifically where your hair is pulled or tied
  • Scalp pain, burning, tenderness, redness, scaling or crusting
  • Patches where the scalp looks smooth or shiny and you can no longer see follicle openings
  • Well-defined round or oval bald patches, without scaling or redness
  • Hair loss at the front hairline together with thinning eyebrows
  • Rapid loss over weeks rather than a gradual increase over months

Redness, scaling and the loss of visible follicle openings can point to scarring conditions. Frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris are two, and a scalp biopsy is how those get diagnosed (Fechine et al., 2022, PubMed: 35379508). Well-defined round patches without any scaling or redness look different and often indicate alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition rather than a nutritional one (Spano and Donovan, 2015, PubMed: 26371097). Neither is common, and neither is a reason to panic about a normal bad hair week, but both are worth a proper look rather than another product.

Where to start

Look at the ends. If the pieces are short and blunt, the problem is happening outside your body and the fix is in how you handle your hair. Loosen everything, use less heat, be careful when it is wet, and accept that improvement comes with new growth rather than with a bottle.

If the strands are full length with a pale bulb, the problem is internal, and it is worth finding out which internal. Ferritin rather than iron alone, a full thyroid panel, vitamin D and zinc, and hormones where the picture suggests it. Guessing at supplements for a cause you have not identified is how people lose a year.
